UPDATE:

More Changes for NY Fight Result?

On Wednesday, the New York State Athletic Commission overruled Raul Frank’s 7th round TKO win over Terrance “Heat” Cauthen by declaring the fight a no-decision. The bout took place last Thursday January 25th, at the Paradise Theater in the Bronx. Cauthen's promoter Joe DeGuardia, however, will not settle for the no-decision result and is going for a win for his fighter, who was leading 60-54, 60-54, 59-55 on the cards when he was virtually KO'd by a headbutt. "The decision made today by the NYSAC is the first step in ensuring a just result in the fight," stated DeGuardia. "I anticipate that after a full hearing on the matter the NYSAC will declare Terrance Cauthen a technical decision winner as the rules seem to require going to the scorecards after an unintentional head-butt." Both the Terrance Cauthen and Raul Frank camps are expected to appeal the decision. In any event, Cauthen retains the USBA jr. middleweight championship.

Raul Frank of Brooklyn, by way of Guyana, scored a controversial seventh round stoppage  over Terrance Cauthen in a scheduled 12-round USBA Jr. Middleweight championship bout Thursday night on a Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing card at The Paradise Theatre in the Bronx.

After six uneventful rounds Frank, (28-5-3, 14 KOs) dropped Cauthen, (32-4, 9 KOs) from an accidental head butt.

The angle that referee Ricky Gonzalez was standing at made it difficult for him to see the head butt, but it damaged Cauthen’s balance, leaving him staggering and sending him crashing to the canvas.

Thinking it was a punch, Gonzalez ruled it a TKO victory for Frank. “Our rules don’t allow for instant replay,” said Chairman of the New York State Athletic Commission, Ron Scott Stevens. Continuing, “If had been scored an unintentional butt, then we would have gone to the scorecards. I am having both parties come into the office next Wednesday to come up with a decision that’s in the best interest of boxing.”

The unfortunate part of this situation is that Cauthen was ahead on all three scorecards, 60-54 and 59-55 twice.

“The commission must do what is just and fair”, said Promoter Joe DeGuardia after the hearing was announced.

Maureen Shea improved to 9-0 after scoring a unanimous decision over Elizabeth Villareal, of San Antonio, Texas. With the loss Villareal falls to 2-2-1.

Featherweight Eric Hunter of Philadelphia scored a six-round unanimous decision over Pasquale Rouse, of the Bronx.

The scores read 58-56, 59-56, and 59-55 in favor of Hunter who improved to 6-1 and 3 KOs.

The loss drops Rouse to 19-12-3, 11 KOs.

Light heavyweight Joel Castillo, of the Bronx scored a majority decision over William Gill of Toms River, New Jersey, in a scheduled four rounder.

The scores were 39-37 twice and 38-38 in favor of the Dominican native. Castillo remains undefeated at 5-0. Gill falls to 6-14.

Vaughn Parham, of the Bronx scored a TKO at 2:06 mark of the first round over Travis Waters, of Salisbury, Maryland, in a battle of debuting heavyweights.

An eye injury sustained by Waters prevented him from continuing in the bout.

Junior flyweight Suszannah Warner scored a third round TKO over Nancy Bonilla of Camuy, Puerto Rico, in a scheduled four rounder. Warner improved to 7-3 with her second knockout in ten fights. Bonilla drops to 2-5.

In the opening bout welterweight Tommy Rainone of Plainview, Long Island, scored a four-round lackluster majority decision over veteran John Lipscomb of Cleveland.

The score cards read 40-36 twice and 38-38 in favor of Rainone.

Rainone remains undefeated at 4-0, while Lipscomb falls to 2-8.
